Subject: Fwd: Horn Lake, MS Update-----WE WON!!!!
Yes folks, you can beat city hall. Tonight, the Board of Aldermen of Horn
Lake, Mississippi voted to defeat a proposal that would have detrimentally
affected our efforts to gather petition signatures to save the Mississippi
flag. Members of FreeMississippi.org were on hand from 5 different counties
to stand up for their first amendment rights.
Board members voted 3-2 against a proposal put forth by Alderman Brenda
Carter that would have denied access to the Old City Hall parking lot and
grounds. For the last 90 days, this location has been critical to efforts
to secure Ballot Iniative Petition signatures. In the end, aldermen J.W.
McElhaney, Mike Warren, and Ken Shackleford voted on our behalf. Jeanne
Shannon voted along with Carter to deny access to this piece of public
property. The mayor does not have a vote, but conducted the meeting with
great respect for all interested parties. Police Chief Wailey was very open
and forthcoming in answers to questions directed to him.
FreeMississippi.org members David Counce of Southaven, Mike Von Wert of
Tupelo, and Del Von Wert of Aberdeen addressed the board eloquently and
passionately in their defense of our group's right to use public property
for expression of political views. We will be out tomorrow afternoon
(Wednesday) to resume gathering signatures.
Conclusion: Thanks to all who sent faxes and made phone calls to Horn Lake
city officials. From what we have been able to gather from our sources,
your efforts made a difference. Action Plan: Please make no further calls,
letters, or faxes to Horn Lake officials. For now the issue has been
settled. We will keep you posted if there are any future negative
developments. To God be the glory!
