Tennessee Edition - Dixie Daily News

The Dixie Daily News - State Editions  provide news links & editorials promoting  conservative limited government, liberty,  traditional patriotic & Christian values, free-markets & honest Southern heritage, history & events on a state by state basis.

To advance this mission, our editorial policy is to favor essays & links promoting the above historic values, ideas and philosophy. The original US constitutional republic made up of sovereign states & a weak federal government, was an example to the world of  freedom, liberty & representative government.   A weak federal structure held in check by state sovereignty and the Constitution was right for America's founding fathers, right for our Confederate ancestors and is right for us today. Please forward your personal and suggested essays, news tips, editorials and events to the State Edition Editor e-mail address shown below.

Our goal is to provide conservative, libertarian,  traditional values & free-market oriented links and activist tools for Southerners who desire to defend their liberty outside the liberal establishment & special interests controlling much of our two-party leadership.

We want to help our readers and activists defend limited government, Christian values, free-markets & honest Southern heritage, history & rights from attack by the entrenched, power hungry political, media and global elites.  We appreciate your comments and suggestions as to how we can make the Southern Caucus State Pages more helpful. Morgan's Daring Raids, Lebanon TN June 8 - 9 - reenactments, ball and living history celebration

JOSEPH E. JOHNSTON SCV CAMP #28
Mt. Olivet Cemetery Tour-June 1st!

The Camp takes great pleasure in announcing the return of the award-winning Mt. Olivet "Illuminated Confederate" Cemetery Tour on Saturday, June 1st, from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M., at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1101 Lebanon Pike (east of Fessler's Lane), in Donelson. This is the Camp's tenth cemetery tour at Mt. Olivet in as many years, but this one is different: It is a summer tour. As members know, the Camp usually holds this event in October. However, because of last year's "rain out," the Camp is hosting two tours this year: June and October. In deference to the heat and to daylight saving time, the June tour is starting a little later than usual: 6 P.M.

Ross Massey will return as the Tour's creative force. He is creating a new dramatic program, and guests will not be disappointed. This is the Camp's showcase event, and it is the model for virtually all tours in large cemeteries.

The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for students (through high school). There is no charge for pre-school children. For more information, call 615-780-3598.

June 22, 2002 - The Tullahoma Campaign June 1863  Battlefield Tour

The Battle at Hoover's Gap & The Skirmish at Liberty Gap

Step back into time with us as renowned author and historian Dr. Michael R. Bradley leads you on a driving tour of The June 1863 Tullahoma Campaign.

Drive the scenic middle Tennessee country side stopping at key points of the engagement and listen to the tales of valor both north and south as Dr. Bradley takes you back to those desperate days in June of 1863 as only he can. You will stand where they stood, look across the same unchanged landscape as they did when they faced there foe.

With a little imagination you'll be right there with them as Union General Willich loose's another mounted courier to Confederate sharpshooters or as the 2nd Arkansas Regiments flag bearer is killed and rolls down Beechboard Hill (shown in photo) into the union lines where there Regimental flag is captured.

Although the Campaign is little known to the general public due to the fact that it took place on the same days as Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg it is arguably strategically more important than either.

When President Abraham Lincoln heard of the Tullahoma Campaign he said
"The most brilliant piece of strategy that I know of".

This campaign gave rise to such legends as General Patrick Cleburne's Whitworth Sharpshooters who skill at long distance shooting was unmatched until the Vietnam war, and Wilder's Lightning Brigade, the first brigade to use the Spencer repeating rifles in a major campaign. The rifle the Confederates referred to as "the rifle the Yankee's could load on Sunday and shoot all week".

General (later President) Garfield stayed in constant touch with the Generals in the field from the Army of the Cumberland Headquarters in Murfreesboro. General Rosecrans (overall commander) feigned a frontal assault and then quickly out flanked General Bragg, Polk and Hardee through Hoover's Gap resulting in the complete loss of Middle Tennessee for the Confederates. A running battle / rear guard action ensued that lasted until July 8th when Gen. Bragg crossed the mountain at Cowan Tn.

Tour of Hoover's Gap leaves the Blockade Runner at 10:30, This tour includes a stop at The Beech Grove Confederate Cemetery. It returns in approximately 1 hour and 30 min.

The Liberty Gap tour leaves the Blockade Runner Store at 1:00 and returns in approximately 1 hour.

BOTH TOURS ARE FREE!

For more information or to make reservations call the Blockade Runner at 931-389-6294 Blockade Runner is located on Hwy 269 half way between Bell Buckle and Wartrace.
