The Union League:
Reconstruction Politics & Influence in the South
" The
Union League is little known, but was a highly influential part of the
northern war effort during the War Between the States, 1861-1865, and its
evolution into a Republican Party machine to control the postwar freedmen
vote made it a powerful force of Congressional Reconstruction. The Union
League was instrumental in fomenting the racial antagonism that led to
political strife between Southern blacks and whites, and it helped create
the social and political environment that brought the Ku Klux Klan into
existence as a reaction and defensive measure."

The Cape Fear Chapter/League of the South
proudly presents Mr. Thuersam as part of its monthly Southern Lecture
Series. These lectures by historians, scholars and academics are presented
in order to bring an in depth and critical understanding of Southern
history and culture to the citizens in the Cape Fear region. All lectures
promise to be interesting, provocative and are intended to stimulate the
audience to pursue further study on their own to broaden their knowledge
of Southern history in general, and Cape Fear history in particular. All
lectures are free and open to the public.
